The group will be able to collaborate and take part in various research projects in this environmental tour. Think about surveys, theory and practices. Learn about the archaeological sites of the ancient Maya in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Discover the biology, behavior, breeding, and many more exciting things about the regional wildlife!

There will be walks at night on the beach to look for sea turtles and watch them as they lay eggs. We will visit a crocodile farm and you kayak through the wetlands. We will also visit Rio Lagartos, where you can find flamingos and many other birds!

You will get to see:

Chichén Itzá, Valladolid, Puerto Morelos, Ek Balam, Rio Lagartos, Sian Ka´an Biosphere and cenotes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto MorelosArrival to Cancun and the beginning of the Environmental Educational Tour Mexico. We travel to Puerto Morelos witch is a relatively undeveloped coastal community. Group dinner in hotel and a briefing about the the trip. We stay in Hotel Ojo de Agua tonight!

Day 2: SnorkelingSnorkel in the second largest coral reef in the world. In the afternoon, hike in the botanical garden to see wild spider monkeys and other animals. Lectures on coral reefs and jungle.

Day 3: Cenote and BicycleBicycle trip to cenote Verde Lucero where students can enjoy a zip line. In the afternoon meeting with University Anahuac to participate in a 2-hour discussion on sustainable tourism destinations.

Day 4: Sian Ka’anVisit of the Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve. Kayaking in the lagoons of Sian Ka´an. Visit the Sian Ka´an visitor center learning about alternative energy for tourism developments. On the way out snorkel in a pristine cenote in the area. Camping in the reserve. Optional kayaking in the wetlands.

Day 5: KayakingEnjoy an early kayaking in the reserve. Bicycle to a great underground river to snorkel. Overnight camping in Sian Ka´an Reserve.

Day 6: Ek BalamDepart for Mayan village, Ek Balam and again learn how local communities are trying to develop tourism products and participate in tourism activities. Once in Ek Balam you will also enjoy visiting the archaeological site. Overnight in the community in cabanas. Lecture on ecotourism.

Day 7: Rio LagartosDepart to Rio Lagartos to enjoy a boat trip to see flamingos and other regional birds (Rio Lagartos has the highest populations of flamingos in America). Drive to Valladolid; Overnight in Vallodolid.

Day 8: Chichen ItzaVisit Chichen Itza archaeological site (one of the new 7 wonders of the world). Swim in Ikkil cenote. Then drive to Puerto Morelos and overnight in Ojo de agua hotel.

Day 9: Transfer to AirportEnd of the trip. Tranfer to the airport.
