5 most impressive cenotes in Yucatan Peninsula

Don’t be scared to leave the beautiful beaches of the Yucatan peninsula and try to go off the beaten track! Yucatan is known for its ‘cenotes´ or underwater sinkholes and caves. Here are the 5 most impressive ones.

  1. Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul is a very popular cenote located in the south of Playa del Carmen. This cenote is a little bit different than the others because it’s more open, like a lake. This makes it easier for kids to go into the water. You can also jump from a cliff for the ones who dare. There are even quiet corners where you can relax.

  1. Cenote X’Canche

Cenote X’Canche is a hidden cenote and lesser-frequented. It is located about 1.5 km into the jungle, near Ek Balam. The cenote is perfectly round and large located deep in the ground with sharp rock walls. Here you are surrounded by gorgeous turquoise-colored water and a lot of tree roots that are dangling into the water.

  1. Cenote Ik Kil

Cenote Ik Kil is located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula and is part of the Ik Kil Archeological Park near Chichen Itza. The cenote is open to the sky with the water level about 26 meters below ground level. There is a carved stairway down to a swimming platform or if you want you can jump!

  1. Cenote Dos Ojos

Dos Ojos (two eyes) is named after a pair of cenotes that connect into a giant underground cavern, an awesome effect that makes Dos Ojos one of the best-known cenotes near Playa del Carmen for snorkeling and scuba diving. It is one of the largest underwater cave systems which makes it one of the most extravagant diving sites in Yucatan.

  1. Cenote Dzitnup

10 kilometers in the south of Valladolid you can explore the cenote Dzitnup. This cenote is the most famous of Yucatan because it was one of the first discovered and opened to the public. The entrance is very impressive, you have to pass through a hole. You can swim here in the green and blue clear water with a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and there are a lot of strange rock formations.
