Holbox: Paradise Island in Mexico

Isla Holbox is a small out-of-the-way Mexican island where you can go back to the days of no cars, beach roads and beautiful sunsets.

The island is located west of Cancun in the northeast corner of Quintana Roo, Mexico. One of the most amazing things is that the roads at the island are only travelled by electric golf carts, and the streets are whole sand so you have this rare feeling of being far away, even like traveling in time to the past.

Taxi golf carts and rental golf carts are common ways to get around the town, besides bicycles and by feet, so if you want to explore Holbox it will be amazing if you cross the whole island by bike.

From Cancún it takes 3 hours by bus to get to Chiquila, where you can take the ferry to Isla Holbox. An old singing man on the ferry immediately creates a good mood feeling and reinforced while you reach the island.

The small streets made of white sand makes it a natural beauty. Most of the people on the island are living from the fish. You find many seafood restaurants on the coast of the sea.

Holbox is separated from the mainland coast of Mexico by a shallow lagoon which gives sanctuary to thousands of flamingos, pelicans and many other bird species. The island is also known for its whale sharks during the summer months. Also kayaking, kite boarding and paddle boarding in the winter months attracts attention for tourists.

However, you will not find mass tourism which makes it a peaceful place to stay. Travelers who visit the island can fully relax in a hammock on the beach, walking through the town or just try a delicious lobster pizza for dinner. Also watching the sunset is a must see for tourists. It is a place to hide and spend a lovely weekend away from the crowds of Cancun.

EcoColors Tours gives you the opportunity to discover the beauty of this island yourself. With the Holbox Island Adventure Tour you explore the amazing wildlife with especially attention to birds and crocodiles. Another experience you should try is visiting The Little Bird Island, the place were important aquatic birds nest. This tour is great for bird lovers and has the perfect combination of nature and adventure in the Yucatan Peninsula!
